他的不超过六平方米的小屋就在湖畔,他这样描写他的小屋“I have thus a tight shingled and plastered house, ten feet wide by 15 feet long, and 8 feet posts with a garret and a closet, a large window on each side, 2 trap doors, one door at the end and a brick fire place opposite。。。。。。I had three chairs in my house: one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society. When visitors came in larger and unexpected numbers there was but the third chair for them all, but they generally economized the room by standing up. It is surprising how many great men and women a small house will contain. I have had twenty-five or thirty souls, with their bodies, at once under my roof, and yet we often parted without being aware that we had come very near to one another……”走进他的屋子里,西边床边的一扇窗可以看见夕阳,东边的窗正好看见Walden Pond,窗下一桌一椅,门口里面正对着的墙是壁炉。简单的不能再简单的空间里曾经容纳了一个不简单的灵魂。他邀请Emerson和其他作家来到他的小屋,共同探讨艺术与人生。虽然当年他只有三把椅子,但是那些挤着站在他小屋里的作家使这间房子变成里世界上最富有的建筑。想象着当年他如何在这里写出启迪人心智的语言,想象着他的屋顶下如何聚集了那些伟大的灵魂,很神往。想起《陋室铭》里的“谈笑有鸿儒,往来无白丁”,境界是一样的。
阳光正好从西窗照进来,桌上的鹅毛笔晕着一层金黄,我恭恭敬敬地在留言册上写下“10月19日,中国董华春来访,感谢Walden Pond,感谢Henry David Thoreau,愿所有喜爱大自然的人精神永生。”
三个人回去接CHJ,我和CHY在楼下等他们,看到夜空里只有几颗星,居然有大雁飞过,排成人字,于是想起小时候书本上写到大雁南飞,忽而成人字,忽而成一字。在都市里读书,在四处漂泊,已经很多年没有见到大雁,今天见到,忍不住回忆小时候坐在板凳上看它们飞过的那种惊喜与兴奋。我们都是飞行的大雁吧?匆匆地飞着,忘记了看风景。如果Henry David Thoreau还活着,他一定不会错过Concord夜空里排成人字的大雁。有趣的是,我们发现它们不是往南,而是往北。也许只有一个解释,它们和我们一样,到北面来寻找秋景。
10月21日星期日晴
早上8:30从CONCORD出发,四个人开着车直奔NEW HAMPSHERE的WHITE MOUNTAIN。路上在一家小店的洗手间里看见有一幅风景画,上面写着“Beauty seen never lost”,很是喜欢。
